Orkney can offer a break that will allow you to experience remote island life at its most authentic.

But while island customs are well preserved and these unspoilt areas remain traditional at heart, the islands are hugely accessible, with a variety of options available to travellers crossing from mainland Scotland.

You can choose a shorter ferry crossing, either from Scrabster, or Gills Bay in Caithness — or for less of a road trip, you can catch a ferry from Aberdeen. If you prefer to come by air, regular flights are available from most major Scottish airports, and won’t have you in the air for much more than an hour.
